Welcome to Masjid al-Noor

At Masjid Al-Noor, also known as the Islamic Society of Southwest Washington (ISWW), we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals. Rooted in mainstream Islamic principles, we emphasize unity, acceptance, and compassion. Discover our mission, our history, and how we strive to build bridges in the Vancouver, WA community.

Our mission & core values

Masjid Al-Noor is dedicated to establishing congregational prayers and conducting various religious activities fully open to men, women, and children. We actively practice principles of moderation, tolerance, inclusiveness, and conflict avoidance, always within the structural limits of the Quran and Sunnah, to foster unity among Muslims. Our community thrives on respect for diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and practices, striving to embody the values of love and harmony that are at the heart of our faith.

Our journey & structure

The Islamic Society of Southwest Washington (ISWW) began its journey with the signing of its by-laws on June 10, 1998. Since 2014, we have had the pleasure of having our own permanent facility in a quiet part of Vancouver, lovingly known as 'Masjid al-Noor,' which means 'Mosque of Light.' We operate as a 501c3 non-profit organization, currently managed by a dedicated team of 3 board of trustees and 6 board of directors, elected periodically from our congregation in a volunteer capacity. Our board is diverse in ethnicity, social status and age,  reflecting our community's rich tapestry.

Building bridges & community

Our commitment extends beyond our masjid walls. We actively participate in numerous interfaith activities with local Churches, Synagogues, and Temples, fostering unity, understanding, and support among all faith groups we encounter. The ISWW has been a faithful sponsor of the Peace and Justice fair in Vancouver, WA, for over a decade. Our goal is to promote joint action among Muslim organizations of the Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon areas, and to develop mutual understanding with and among non-Muslims to effectively communicate the principles of Islam.

Moon Sighting Policy

ISSWW adheres to the traditional view of accepting a global naked-eye sighting of the new crescent moon.

In the case of unverified, uncorroborated moon sightings approved by foreign governments to the east of us, the ISSWW board will refer to the guidance of Hilal committees in North America, such as the Hilal Committee of Chicago.

"Masjid al-noor is truly a place of light and welcome. The warmth, inclusivity, and educational programs have enriched my family's life in Vancouver."
